Here are a few bits and answers from questions on what to expect in my 2-minute video below:
Healthy weight. It's not what you think. It differs person by person, shape by shape, ethnicity to ethnicity, and on it goes. As my teachers, Justine and Monique, ALWAYS say, "IT DEPENDS". Yes, it truly does.
One of the things that annoys me most (yes, even yogi's get annoyed, we just counterbalance it with love and light), is that when I talk about yoga for healthy weight, people assume and envision that only a power yoga class in a heated room will help them OR they get discouraged before they even come BECAUSE they see "yogi's" with "yoga bodies" on Instagram that they judge themselves against and think that's what it is about.
When in fact, therapeutic yoga for HEALTHY WEIGHT, is so much more. It's about keeping our bodies and minds in a balanced state. It's about doing MORE deep relaxation than vigorous flows. It's about creating healthy thoughts about our bodies and selves, evolving our eating habits, and most importantly, creating rituals that keep us on track when we start to run off the ranch.
My disclaimer: I personally love doing a power class once a week - my favorite teacher in Chicago is Lizzi Cutler! I love to sweat and pump my muscles up, then I practice my own restorative poses and deep relaxation with another favorite, Nischala Joy Devi, Rodney Stryker, or Richard Miller.
It's that simple. Why?
The link between Yoga and Weight Loss exists. However, the definition of weight loss - can be either in pounds or inches. It's also a relative number that is based on our age, our constitution, genetics, conditions, what's going on in our lives, what we eat, what type of exercise we get, how much or how little we sleep, and what our attitudes are like.
Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, and Yoga Therapy create a powerful combination that support our body's ability to lose weight. Together these modalities collaborate to help balance the body's metabolism and hormones and create a nurturing, pain-free environment for body movement. These ancient medical practices have been used for thousands of years to assist the body in losing weight and in maintaining healthy weight.
The Therapeutic Yoga Program at the Chicago Healing Center will be on Tuesday's, and will incorporate all three together.
